Former justice Manik detained
Former Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik was detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at the Kanaighat border area in Sylhet just before he was scheduled to depart for India on Friday (August 24).
BGB headquarters PRO Shariful Islam said local residents detained him from Zakiganj border area in Sylhet and handed him over to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). Later, he was taken to the Sylhet BGB Sector Headquarters.
According to sources, he was attempting to flee to India.
Shamsuddin Choudhury is a retired justice of the Appellate Division of Bangladesh Supreme Court.
Earlier, a case was filed with Dhaka's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court on Thursday against Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSoD) President Hasanul Haque Inu for making derogatory remarks about BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.
After a hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to submit a report after an investigation.
During a talk show aired on "Channel i" in July amidst student protests, Manik's remarks, including misogynistic and insulting behaviour, were witnessed by the public and went viral on social media.
He later sought an apology from the TV anchor.
