Police have arrested Tarikul Islam (35), personal assistant to former Cultural Affairs Minister and former Member of Parliament Asaduzzaman Noor, in connection with a murder case in Nilphamari.

Nilphamari Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jilur Rahman confirmed the matter on Sunday (August 2). He said Tarikul Islam was detained from the Shantinagar area of the city on Saturday (August 1) evening.

Police said he is an accused in the murder case of farmer Siddique Ali, which took place in 2013.

According to the case, on December 14, 2013, during an attack on the house of BNP leader Golam Rabbani in the Ramganjhat Bazar area, ordinary people in the vicinity were also beaten. In that incident, farmer Siddique Ali was seriously injured and fell on the road, where he was allegedly deliberately run over and killed. The case mention refers to a vehicle carrying then-MP Asaduzzaman Noor.

The complainant, the victim's son, alleged they had no opportunity to file the case earlier as the Awami League was in power at the time. Following the political change in July 2024, he filed the case through the court when conditions became favourable.

OC Jilur Rahman said Tarikul Islam was arrested in the Siddique Ali murder case. He also has three other cases against him.

Police said the arrested individual has been produced before the court, and investigation into the case is ongoing.
