Zebunnesa Afroz, Vice President of the Barishal Metropolitan Awami League and former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Barishal-5 (Metropolitan-Sadar) constituency, has been arrested. She was taken into custody by the Detective Branch (DB) of the police from her residence in Dhaka late Friday night (16 May). DB Joint Commissioner Mohammad Nasirul Islam confirmed the arrest to the media on Saturday (17 May). He stated that Zebunnesa is currently in DB custody. Zebunnesa Afroz is the widow of late Shawkat Hossain Hiron, the former Mayor of Barishal City. Hiron passed away in April 2014 while serving as an MP. Following his death, Zebunnesa contested the by-election for the same seat and won. She has been named as an accused in multiple cases filed in Barishal after August 5.

বরিশাল মহানগর আওয়ামী লীগের সহ-সভাপতি ও বরিশাল-৫ (মহানগর-সদর) আসনের সাবেক সংসদ সদস্য (এমপি) জেবুন্নেছা আফরোজকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়েছে। শুক্রবার (১৬ মে) দিবাগত রাতে ঢাকার বাসা থেকে তাকে গ্রেপ্তার করে পুলিশের গোয়েন্দা বিভাগ (ডিবি)। শনিবার (১৭ মে) ডিবির যুগ্ম কমিশনার মোহাম্মদ নাসিরুল ইসলাম গ্রেপ্তারের বিষয়টি গণমাধ্যমকে নিশ্চিত করেছেন। তিনি জানান, বর্তমানে জেবুন্নেছা ডিবি হেফাজতে আছেন। জেবুন্নেছা আফরোজ বরিশাল সিটির সাবেক মেয়র প্রয়াত শওকত হোসেন হিরণের স্ত্রী। ২০১৪ সালে এপ্রিলে সংসদ সদস্য থাকাকালে হিরণ মৃত্যুবরণ করেন। পরে সেই আসনে তার স্ত্রী জেবুন্নেছা উপনির্বাচন করে জয়ী হন। ৫ আগস্টের পর বরিশালে দায়ের হওয়া একাধিক মামলায় তাকে আসামি করা হয়।
