Former NCP leader sued over ‘offensive’ post about PM

A case has been filed in Bogura against Gazi Salauddin Tanvir, a former leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP), over allegations that he made an "offensive" social media post about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The case was filed at Bogura Sadar Police Station on Sunday night by Maftun Ahmed Khan Rubel, president of Bogura Sadar Upazila BNP, according to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ibrahim Ali.

The controversy began on Friday after Tanvir published a Facebook post blaming leaders of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal for attacks and obstructions during the NCP's march in several districts of Sylhet Division. The post allegedly contained "offensive remarks" about the prime minister.

Following widespread criticism, Tanvir deleted the post. However, screenshots had already circulated on social media. He later published another post expressing regret over his remarks.

Later the same day, the NCP relieved Tanvir of his party position. The decision was announced in a notice issued by Sadia Farzana Dinar, a member of the party's office cell.

According to the case statement, the Facebook post defamed the prime minister and attempted to create public confusion and unrest. It states that BNP leaders and activists decided to file the case after discussing the matter internally.

OC Ibrahim Ali said the allegations would be investigated and legal action would be taken in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal held a protest procession in Bogura, demanding Tanvir's arrest and trial over the alleged offensive post.

Demonstrators also burned an effigy of him during the protest.
