The foundation stone of the Laldia Container Terminal, a major project aimed at expanding and modernising the capacity of Chattogram Port, will be laid in Patenga on Sunday (August 30).

Shipping, Road Transport and Bridges, and Railways Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam is scheduled to lay the foundation stone at the project site at 11am, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Shipping on Saturday.

The terminal is being developed with Danish cooperation as part of efforts to strengthen Chattogram Port’s handling capacity and improve the efficiency of Bangladesh’s foreign trade.

As the country’s import-export trade continues to grow, pressure on Chattogram Port has increased, creating a need for greater container-handling capacity, faster cargo operations and more efficient port services.

The ministry said the Laldia terminal is expected to ease pressure on the port’s existing infrastructure while increasing container handling and transportation capacity. The facility is planned to use modern infrastructure and technology-driven management systems.

Once operational, the terminal is expected to reduce cargo handling and transportation times, improve logistics efficiency and strengthen Bangladesh’s competitiveness in international trade.

The ministry considers the project an important part of the government’s ongoing efforts to modernise the country’s port infrastructure.

Representatives of various ministries, Chattogram Port Authority, local and foreign companies, business leaders and media organisations are expected to attend the foundation-laying ceremony.
