Four arrested in Chattogram for stabbing police SI in Mohammadpur

Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the hacking and injuring of Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Osman Goni in the capital's Mohammadpur area.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Jewel Rana of the Mohammadpur Zone confirmed the matter on Sunday (July 26) evening.

The arrested have been identified as Sharif Uddin Babu (22), Nazmul Hasan (23), Imon (23) and Jewel (22).

He said the four were arrested from the Khulshi Police Station area in Chattogram based on information technology and secret intelligence. However, the motive behind the attack on the SI remains unclear.

Earlier, on Thursday night, SI Osman Goni was stabbed while returning home with his wife and child in the Kaderabad Housing area under Mohammadpur Police Station. He is posted at the Immigration Branch of the Special Branch (SB) at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

According to police sources, around 9:30pm, while returning from shopping on Road No. 4, Block C of Kaderabad Housing, an assailant stabbed Osman Goni in the back from behind and fled. The injured officer attempted to chase the attacker but could not catch him.

Following the incident, Osman Goni himself filed a case at Mohammadpur Police Station. In the case statement, he mentioned that the attack occurred while he was returning home with his wife Tanzina Sima and their only child.

After being critically injured, he was initially treated at a local clinic, followed by treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital. He reportedly received 45 stitches on his back.

Police had earlier said the attackers had been tentatively identified, but the motive for the attack remained unclear.

Assistant Commissioner of Police of the Mohammadpur-Adabor Zone under Tejgaon Division, Abdullah Al Mamun, had earlier stated that it was not a snatching incident and suggested the attack might have been the result of a prior enmity. He said the actual motive would be known once those involved were arrested.

Police said CCTV footage showed three youths speaking to Osman Goni before the attack and later running away. The four arrested are now being interrogated to determine the motive and details of the incident.
