Four arrested over killing of Rakibul at Shaheed Minar: Police

Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the murder of content creator Rakibul Islam, 22, at the central Shaheed Minar area of Dhaka.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media and Public Relations Department confirmed this information in a WhatsApp message sent on Wednesday morning (March 18).

A detailed briefing on the case will be held at the DMP Media Centre at 1:00pm today.

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, Rakibul was socialising with friends on the Shaheed Minar steps late Sunday night when a group of attackers opened fire and then stabbed him repeatedly before fleeing the scene. One person present at the scene was apprehended with a machete and handed over to Shahbagh Police Station.

Investigations indicate that the murder was premeditated and arose from a personal dispute. Police said seven to eight attackers participated in the assault, brought into Dhaka from a specific location.

Rakibul’s family has filed a case later over the incident.

Rakibul hailed from Bhola Sadar Upazila, and his father, Tarikul Islam Khokon, works at Kuwait Maitri Hall of Dhaka University. Rakibul was a second-year undergraduate student at Borhanuddin Postgraduate College in Dhaka.
