Four gone missing after boat capsizes in Sunamganj

Four people have gone missing after a small country boat capsized in a haor in Sunamganj's Jagannathpur upazila while they were returning home from a religious gathering.

The incident occurred around 3:00am on Friday night (July 31) in the Boidhakhali area of Bhabanipur, under the municipal limits of Jagannathpur, in the Moiyar Haor.

The missing have been identified as Arun Debnath, 45, Adhir, 50, Hemendra Debnath, 55, and Satindra Debnath, all residents of Bhabanipur.

According to local residents, several members of the Hindu community had attended a religious programme at a house in the Baluchal area of Moiyar Haor. While returning home in a small wooden boat, the vessel capsized near Boidhakhali.

Several passengers managed to swim ashore, but the four men went missing in the water.

A Fire Service rescue team launched a search operation on Saturday morning (August 1) after being informed of the incident.

Jagannathpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Islam Uddin said rescue personnel were conducting an intensive search at the scene to trace the missing individuals.

The rescue operation was continuing at the time of filing this report.
