Four people were killed in a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a cargo truck on a highway in Kahalu upazila of Bogura.

The accident took place around 10:00am in the Kazipara area of the upazila along the Bogura–Naogaon highway on Saturday (August 1), leaving the pickup completely wrecked and killing all four occupants at the scene.

Police identified one of the victims as Lutfar Rahman, 50, a fish trader from Raghabpur village in Mymensingh Sadar upazila. The identities of the three other victims — the pickup driver, his assistant and another fish trader — had not been confirmed as of Saturday.

According to police and local witnesses, the victims were returning from Naogaon after delivering a consignment of fish transported from Mymensingh. The accident occurred when the pickup attempted to overtake another vehicle before colliding head-on with a cargo truck travelling in the opposite direction.

The force of the impact crushed the front of the pickup, killing all four occupants instantly.

Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kahalu Police Station, said, "The truck driver and his assistant fled the scene immediately after the collision. Police and Fire Service personnel recovered the bodies, removed the damaged vehicles and cleared the highway, allowing traffic to resume."

"Legal proceedings are underway on this matter and the family of Lutfar Rahman has been notified," he added.

"Efforts are also underway to identify the remaining victims and track down the truck driver and his assistant, who remain at large," the OC said.
