Four murders in Rangpur: some parts of post-mortem report do not match police statement

Discrepancies have emerged between the police's account and parts of the autopsy report regarding the murder of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three others—including his wife and child—in Rangpur, an incident allegedly triggered by objections raised against drug use. Dr. Bablu Kishor Biswas, the physician who conducted the autopsy, shared details about the killings with journalists on Monday.

He said, “All four victims were killed by strangulation. However, no evidence of jaw fracture was found in the post-mortem. Many have spread rumours that acid was used to destroy the faces of the bodies. But no evidence of this was found in the post-mortem. Mainly because the bodies had been lying for a few days the faces have become like scorched.” Bablu Kishor Biswas further said, “Various samples have been collected in the post-mortem, those will be sent to the CID lab.”

Earlier Mohammad Abdul Mabud, Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, had informed in a press conference on Sunday that the throat and mouth of Agami Chakrabarti, who was a victim of the murder, had been twisted with a rope in such a way that her eyes came out and the jaw of the teeth broke. Support for this information of jaw fracture was not found in the statement of the post-mortem doctor on Monday.

It may be mentioned that as the relatives of Ganapati Chakrabarti, a resident of Machuapara in Rangpur city and a retired teacher of Rangpur Zilla School, did not get any response from his house they informed the police on Saturday evening. Around 10:30pm police went to the spot, broke the lock of the house and found the bodies of Ganapati Chakrabarti, 65, on the attic, his wife Preetilata Chakrabarti, 52, and daughter Agami Chakrabarti, 25, on the stairs and Priyam Chakrabarti, 12, a student of class five of Rangpur Zilla School, in the bedroom on the first floor. A stir has started across the country including Rangpur over this tragic murder incident.

Mugdha Das, 23, son of Kanudas of Machuapara area of the city who has been arrested, used to work as an employee of a fish shop in City Bazar and Siddhartha Das, 19, used to work as a craftsman in a gold shop. They are maternal cousins by relation.
