A 10-year-old boy was killed after a tree branch fell on his head while he was playing near his home in Rangunia upazila of Chattogram on Friday afternoon.

The victim, Nishit Deb, was the son of Khokon Deb and Sumi Deb of North Parua village under Parua Union. He was a fourth-grade student at North Parua Government Primary School.

According to police and local sources, Nishit was playing with other children under a tree beside his house when a heavy branch, which had been left hanging after being damaged by strong winds earlier, suddenly broke off and struck him on the head, leaving him critically injured.

Local residents rushed the child to Rangunia Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared him dead.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Zahir Uddin of Rangunia Police Station said police visited the scene after receiving the information.

Preliminary findings indicate that the branch had been partially broken and hanging from the tree following a recent windstorm before it eventually fell on the child, causing the fatal injury.
