Free media essential for democracy: Mirza Fakhrul
Urging journalists to deliver objective and impartial news, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said journalists must call white white and black black. Highlighting the mistakes of politicians and showing the right path is one of the most important responsibilities of journalism. The success of democracy largely depends on a free and responsible media.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a courtesy exchange with the newly elected committee of Thakurgaon Press Club at the Anisul Haque Auditorium on Friday afternoon, July 3.
The minister said politicians are not above criticism. Mistakes can happen while working to meet people's expectations, and it is the media's responsibility to highlight those mistakes and ensure accountability.
The BNP secretary general said journalists are often attacked and harassed for publishing the truth, which is deeply concerning. The stronger a country's media, the stronger its democracy. The success of democracy largely depends on a free and responsible media.
Addressing journalists, he said they should evaluate work, not individuals. Those who do good work should be praised, and irregularities and corruption should also be fearlessly reported.
Referring to the government's election pledges, Mirza Fakhrul said two new upazilas have been approved in Thakurgaon and related activities have already begun. However, building infrastructure alone is not enough; everyone must play a responsible role in managing the new upazilas alongside developing skilled and honest leadership.
At the end of the event, he welcomed the newly elected committee of Thakurgaon Press Club and expressed hope that through objective journalism, they would further strengthen public trust and take the press club to new heights.
