The government has decided to reverify the list of genuine freedom fighters and ensure the preservation of an accurate historical record, Bangladesh Ministry of Liberation War Affairs announced.

The decision was taken at a consultation meeting with members of the Jatiyo Muktijoddha Council (JMC) held at the ministry’s conference hall on Sunday (February 22).

The meeting was chaired by Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, minister for Liberation War Affairs.

According to an official press release, the meeting approved several key measures aimed at verifying authentic freedom fighters and safeguarding the correct history of Bangladesh’s Liberation War.

Speaking at the session, Minister Hafiz Uddin Ahmed emphasised that the Liberation War forms the foundation of the country’s independence and should not be conflated with other movements or struggles.

He expressed concern over the political misuse of the Liberation War’s ideals, noting that the history and spirit of the struggle have been widely misrepresented over time, leaving many young people unaware of the sacrifices and resilience of the freedom fighters who secured Bangladesh’s independence.

“The Liberation War is the cornerstone of this nation’s birth, and its legacy must be accurately conveyed to our new generation,” the minister said.

The consultation was attended by Jatiyo Muktijoddha Council (JMC) members, the ministry secretary Israt Chowdhury, and other senior officials from the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.
