The government is ramping up fuel reserves to ensure uninterrupted power generation, alongside expanding infrastructure and supply capacity, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said on Friday (April 24).

Speaking to journalists after inspecting the Bashia canal in Sylhet, he said both oil and gas stockpiles are being increased to maintain stable electricity production amid rising demand and global energy uncertainties.

Despite higher costs associated with crude fuel imports, the minister assured that the impact would not be passed on to consumers.

He noted that fuel prices in Bangladesh remain lower than in neighboring countries such as India, Nepal and Pakistan, and the current adjustments are unlikely to significantly drive inflation.

Muktaadir also said the government is moving to enhance liquefied natural gas (LNG) import capacity, with plans to construct new terminals.

The Energy Ministry is expected to invite tenders for the projects soon, the minister added.
