Fuel shortage halts operations at Mongla port

The ongoing national fuel crisis has brought cargo handling and transportation at Mongla Port to a near standstill, with  hundreds of lighter vessels remain idle due to a lack of fuel, severely delaying the unloading of goods from larger mother vessels.

Anchored along the Pasur River and other port ghats for extended periods, these idle vessels have disrupted timely cargo clearance. Importers face hefty demurrage charges, while industries dependent on raw materials are experiencing production slowdowns.

Vessel owners report being unable to transport goods for over a week due to fuel shortages.

Cement factory officials in Khulna say delays in raw material deliveries are forcing them to pay significant fines daily, reduce production, and in some cases, halt operations entirely, leaving workers idle.

Fuel dealers say supply is limited, citing government directives and global market pressures. The surge in domestic demand, combined with international disruptions, has further constrained availability.

Authorities warn that if the crisis persists, it could severely impact import-export trade, industrial output, and the coastal economy.
