Fuel traders call off strike in Sylhet
Sylhet fuel traders have announced the withdrawal of their strike.
However, they have also warned that they will stop pumping oil from depots in case of unchanged marketing policy.
Barrister Riasad Azim Adnan, acting president of the Sylhet divisional committee of the Bangladesh Petroleum Dealers, Distributors, Agents and Petrol Pump Owners Association, made the announcement at their office in Chandipool in the city around 3 pm on Tuesday (March 10).
Earlier on Monday night, the fuel traders had called for the strike in Sylhet in the wake of unpleasant incidents with customers over fuel shortages at some petrol pumps.
At this time, they demanded immediate effective administrative measures to ensure the safety of workers and employees working at petrol pumps, immediate arrest of the attackers and bringing them under the law, immediate withdrawal of the unreasonable daily quota system imposed by the BPC, restoration of a normal, realistic and effective fuel marketing system and ensuring the necessary additional supply on an urgent basis to maintain normal fuel supply in the Sylhet region.
The general public is suffering as fuel sales at petrol pumps in Sylhet are closed due to the strike. In this situation, the strike was called off in view of the assurance of speedy trial of the attacker and ensuring the safety of the pumps, the energy traders said.
However, it was informed at the press conference that they will continue to stop oil extraction and transportation from the depot until their demands are fully met.
