Gandharvapur Water Plant Ready within a year: Mirza Fakhrul
The Gandharvapur Water Treatment Plant Project under construction in Rupganj, Narayanganj will be fully launched within the next one year. If the project is launched, it will be possible to supply 500 million liters of pure water per day to Dhaka city in the first phase and 100 million liters later, said Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He told reporters this while inspecting the ‘Environmentally Sustainable Water Supply (DESWS)’ project being implemented by Dhaka WASA in Gandharvapur, Rupganj Upazila, Narayanganj on Monday (June 8).
Mirza Fakhrul said that there is a plan to start experimental and partial water supply by December this year. After that, all the activities of the project will be completed in phases and fully launched within the next one year.
The Local Government Minister said that Dhaka has been dependent on groundwater for a long time to meet its water needs. As a result, the water level is gradually going down. To overcome this situation, initiatives have been taken to purify the water of the Meghna River and supply it to the capital.
He also said that if the Gandharvapur project is launched, 500 million liters of pure water can be supplied daily in the first phase. If another similar project is implemented, an additional 500 million liters of water can be supplied, which will play an important role in meeting the long-term water needs of the capital.
According to sources related to the project, the cost of construction of the Gandharvapur water treatment plant has been estimated at around 10,974 crore taka. After the inspection, Mirza Fakhrul expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project and directed to complete the remaining work quickly.
