Garment workers block Kuril road, traffic gridlock ensues
Hundreds of workers from Eurozone Fashion blocked a road in the Kuril area of Badda in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon (September 11), demanding unpaid salaries and allowances.
The blockade, near the Kuril Flyover, brought traffic to a standstill, affecting the elevated expressway as well.
According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Gulshan Traffic Division Ziaur Rahman, around 500–600 workers staged the protest in Kuril, while about 200 more blocked both sides of the Dhaka-Uttara-Mymensingh Highway on Airport Road.
The Eurozone workers had previously staged a similar protest after the factory management failed to pay dues despite assurances.
Commuters, including office-goers and emergency service personnel, were forced to wait for long periods due to the traffic congestion.
Law enforcement agencies have been deployed to the area, and police are working to maintain order and calm the situation.
