Garment workers block road in Chattogram demanding unpaid wages
Workers of Etc Jeans factory blocked a road and staged protests in the Aturer Depot area of Chattogram city on Wednesday, August 19, demanding unpaid wages and other benefits.
The workers took position on the main road in the Aturer Depot area and began their protest around 10am, causing severe traffic congestion and disrupting vehicular movement. Commuters and office-goers faced immense suffering.
The workers alleged that their wages and allowances had been due for a long time. Additionally, they claimed the factory authorities were not meeting other legitimate demands. They said they were forced to take to the streets to demand payment of arrears and swift implementation of their other demands.
The workers warned that they would be forced to enforce tougher programmes if their demands, including payment of outstanding wages, were not met soon.
Law enforcement personnel rushed to the scene upon receiving news of the blockade and attempted to bring the situation under control. Police were seen working to restore traffic movement on the road.
