Gas cylinder explosion at Wari restaurant leaves 8 injured

At least eight people were injured in a gas cylinder explosion at a restaurant in the capital’s Wari area on Friday night (January 30).

The incident took place around 10:15pm in the kitchen on the third floor of Pasta Club Restaurant, under Wari police station, officials said.

Those injured include the restaurant’s cashier Shah Alam, 45, and employees Yunus, 30, Sourabh, 25, Mehedi, 25, Mostafa, 27, Abir, 22, Jasim, 28, and Kamrul, 20. All of them were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.

Yusuf Sheikh, who assisted in the rescue, said a sudden explosion occurred in the kitchen, leaving several workers severely burned. The injured were later rushed to the DMCH burn unit.

Harunur Rashid, resident surgeon of the DMCH burn unit, said Kamrul and Jasim were admitted for further treatment, while others received emergency care.

Meanwhile, Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH hospital police outpost, said five of the injured were discharged after receiving primary treatment.

The cause of the explosion could not be immediately determined. Authorities said an investigation is underway.
