Gazette published declaring Ishraque as Mayor of DSCC
The Election Commission (EC) has officially declared BNP candidate Mohammad Ishraque Hossain as the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) through a gazette notification.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told on Sunday (April 27), “The Election Commission has published the gazette declaring Ishraq Hossain as the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, based on the opinion of the Ministry of Law.”
Ishraque Hossain met with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) regarding the gazette earlier, on Thursday (April 24). After the meeting, he told reporters, “The length of my mayoral term will be clear once we sit with the legal panel after the gazette is published. According to the court order, the Election Commission must issue the gazette within 10 working days after receiving the verdict copy.”
Ishraque added, “I have followed all legal procedures. As per the law, any complaint regarding the election must be filed with the election tribunal within 30 days of the gazette being published. It's not like the court suddenly gave a verdict — I had filed the case earlier. The previous mayor, Taposh, repeatedly influenced the process and delayed the verdict.”
Notably, Dhaka’s First Joint District Judge Mohammad Nurul Islam declared Ishraqyue Hossain the winner of the February 1, 2020 DSCC election, citing irregularities and corruption on March 27. In the same verdict, the gazette of former mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, who had won under the 'boat' symbol, was canceled.
