Gazipur RMG workers stage demo blocking Dhk-M'singh highway
Workers of a garment factory blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in protest, demanding payment of their overdue August wages and regular, timely payment of salaries.
The one-hour protest, carried out by TNZ Group, began around 10am.
They lifted the blockade after police and the army intervened, and the factory owners promised to pay the dues by September 24.
Workers from several TNZ Group factories in Gazipur have been protesting for days over unpaid August wages.
On September 14, they demonstrated peacefully after authorities promised payment by Thursday but they were not paid.
The workers said the factory owners do not pay their salaries on time and they have to hold protests every month to get their money.
Shahidaul Islam, additional superintendent of police (Administration) of Gazipur Industrial Police, said: “The workers blocked the road because their outstanding salaries. After the owners promised to settle the dues by September 24, the workers lifted the blockade.”
