General Min Aung Hlaing elected president of Myanmar
Myanmar’s Military Chief General Min Aung Hlaing, has been formally elected president, five years after orchestrating a coup that ousted the country’s elected government.
On Friday (April 3), Min Aung Hlaing secured a majority in the military-controlled parliament, receiving at least 293 of 584 votes. Under the constitution, he resigned as commander-in-chief of the armed forces before assuming the presidency.
Analysts say the new government will continue to reflect strong military influence. General Ye Win Oo has been appointed as the new army chief, and a newly formed advisory council has been granted broad authority over civilian and military matters.
Since the 2021 coup, Myanmar has faced severe political and humanitarian crises. Tens of thousands have been killed or displaced, and millions require urgent aid, according to UN estimates.
The military continues air and drone strikes in rebel-held areas, while opposition groups maintain control over around 90 towns.
Economically, the country struggles with inflation, energy shortages, and disrupted industrial production, compounded by international sanctions and regional instability.
Observers warn that Myanmar’s future hinges on either political compromise or prolonged conflict, with prospects for resolution remaining slim.
