Police have recovered an 18-year-old German tourist’s stolen laptop in Natore through device tracking, the district’s superintendent of police said.

The laptop was recovered from a clothing shop in the Kafunia Patti area of Natore town around 10:00pm yesterday.

Natore Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shariful Haque told The Daily Star that police recovered the laptop from Amar Kumar Saha, 20, after tracking the device and questioning shopkeepers in the area.

He said Amar’s father had reportedly found the laptop abandoned under a seat on the Titumir Express train last Thursday while travelling to Naogaon. The father returned to Natore yesterday and informed his son about it.

Police later verified that the laptop belonged to the German national, Kirill Lander-Weber.

“We tracked the device and went to the area. After visiting shops and questioning people, we eventually found it with a student,” the SP said.
He added that the family had not voluntarily informed police about the laptop and that officers were questioning them to establish the circumstances in which it was found.

Earlier, Lander-Weber lost his laptop and camera at Natore Railway Station on Wednesday afternoon.

He was going to withdraw money from an ATM booth to buy a train ticket and left his bag containing the devices with a man who introduced himself as a railway employee.

When Lander-Weber returned after withdrawing the money, both the man and his bag were gone. He later learnt that the man was not a railway employee and filed a general diary with Natore Sadar Police Station.

After receiving news of the incident, police visited the station on Wednesday night and collected CCTV footage for analysis.

The footage showed a young man wearing a yellow vest befriending the German tourist before taking advantage of the situation. At one point, he removed his vest and concealed the bag inside it before quickly leaving the scene.
