Power generation at the 1,105MW Ghorashal Thermal Power Plant has been fully suspended for over two and a half months due to a persistent gas shortage, according to plant officials.

Chief Engineer Enamul Haque confirmed that three major units—Unit-5 (210MW), Unit-4 (360MW), and Unit-7 (360MW)—were shut down between June 9 and June 14 due to lack of gas supply.

The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has requested alternative gas supply arrangements, but no solution has been implemented so far.

Additionally, Unit-3 (360MW) was taken offline earlier in June after sustaining damage to its turbine rotor blades. Repairs are nearing completion, but resumption of operations also depends on gas availability.

Other units at the plant have long been out of service. Unit-6 (210MW) has been inactive since a turbine fire in 2010. Units 1 and 2, commissioned in 1967 and 1976 respectively with 55MW capacity each, are non-functional due to chronic mechanical failures.

Authorities have announced plans to dismantle these two outdated units and replace them with a modern facility.
