A baby girl has been born in Phulbari, Dinajpur, with a total of 28 fingers and toes on her hands and feet, drawing curiosity in the local community. Medical experts, however, say having extra fingers is a congenital physical condition that can occur for various reasons.

The baby was born to Ariful Islam and Liza at a private clinic in the municipal area of Phulbari. She was delivered by Caesarean section on Sunday (September 13). She is the couple’s first child.

According to family members, Liza fell ill around noon on Sunday and was taken to a private clinic in the town. She later gave birth to the baby girl through surgery in the afternoon.

The newborn had seven fingers on each hand and seven toes on each foot. Each digit had a nail. However, two days after birth, one extra finger on her left hand fell off naturally. The baby also has a cleft lip.

After news of the birth spread on social media, people from surrounding areas began visiting the family’s home to catch a glimpse of the newborn.

Family members said they were initially surprised to see the extra fingers and toes but said they were happy about the child’s birth.

The baby’s father, Ariful Islam, said, “She is our first child. Everything is by Allah’s will, and we are happy.”

S K Sadek Ali, principal of Dinajpur Medical College and a paediatrician, said the medical term for having extra fingers or toes is polydactyly.

“It is not necessarily a problem but a congenital physical characteristic that can occur for various reasons,” he said. “However, the family should consult a specialist to determine whether the child has any other health issues.”
