Girl commits suicide after beaten, insulted in saliish

A young woman,  25, has allegedly committed suicide after being publicly beaten and insulted in a village saliish in Shibaloy upazila of Manikganj. The incident took place in the Uttar Kashadah area of ​​the upazila on Saturday evening (April 18). The incident has created a huge sensation in the area.

According to local sources, the deceased young woman worked in a lock-making factory. A village saliish was organized at her father's house on the night of April 17, alleging a personal relationship. In the saliish, led by local matabar Aziz Khan, the young woman and a young man were beaten in front of everyone.

Eyewitnesses said that during the saliish, the two were tortured with punches, kicks and sticks for a long time. It is also known that there is a video of the incident.

The next morning, the young woman went to work. Returning home in the afternoon, she committed suicide in her house towards evening.

Relatives claim that she chose suicide because she could not bear the mental stress of public humiliation and physical abuse.

The mother of the deceased said, “My daughter was beaten in front of everyone. She could not bear this humiliation. I want justice.”

Some local residents, on condition of anonymity, said that many are afraid to speak out because those involved in the arbitration are influential. It is also known that some of the accused have gone into hiding after the incident. At the same time, there have been allegations of an attempt to cover up the matter.

Shivalay Police Station OC (Investigation) Manabendra Balo said, “The body was recovered after visiting the scene and sent to the Manikganj Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. No written complaint has been received in the incident yet. However, the police are seriously investigating it.”

The locals demanded a proper investigation into the incident and bringing those responsible to justice.
