Global support behind Bangladesh’s democratic transition: Mirza Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said Bangladesh’s democratic transition through elections enjoys strong backing from the international community, particularly democratic nations.
Speaking to reporters on Friday night (October 3) at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on his return from the United States, Fakhrul emphasized that his party’s sole focus is to restore democracy through the upcoming February elections. “Our message is clear. As instructed by our leader Tarique Rahman, we are preparing for the polls,” he stated.
Highlighting his participation in the 80th UN General Assembly alongside Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Fakhrul described the visit as a success. “Bangladesh’s message has reached the world. The sessions and meetings were significant not only for the country but also for the future of democracy here,” he said.
Responding to questions about his interactions in New York, Fakhrul confirmed meetings with several international representatives. On reports of harassment at the airport there, he downplayed the incident, attributing it to what he called “the culture of the Awami League.”
Fakhrul traveled to New York on September 23 as part of the Chief Adviser’s delegation, which included BNP acting chairman’s adviser Humayun Kabir, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, and NCP leaders Akhter Hossain and Tasnim Jara.
The Chief Adviser returned home on October 2.
