The death toll from Wednesday's violent clashes in Gopalganj rose to five after Ramjan Munshi, an autorickshaw driver injured in the unrest, died early Thursday (July 18) while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Ramjan was shot in the wrist and armpit around 2:30pm on Wednesday while driving through the area. He was admitted to the hospital that night and succumbed to his injuries around 1:45am on Thursday, according to his brother Imran Munshi.

Two other victims of gunshot injuries, Sumon Biswas and Abbas Ali, are still receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College.

The violence broke out on Wednesday during a National Citizens Party (NCP) rally, following escalating tension that began Tuesday. Clashes erupted between police, army personnel, and Awami League supporters, quickly spreading throughout the city.

Four others killed in the incident were identified as Dipto Saha, 30, Ramjan Kazi, 17, Sohel Rana, 35, and Emon. At least nine people suffered gunshot wounds, and over 50 others were injured. No official case had been filed as of Thursday night.

To restore order, authorities imposed a curfew in Gopalganj city from Wednesday night, later extending it until Friday. Joint security forces have arrested 24 individuals suspected of involvement in the violence.
