Leaders and activists of the Awami League and the banned student group Chhatra League launched an attack on the Gopalganj District Jail on Wednesday afternoon, causing significant vandalism. Fortunately, no prisoners have escaped.

The incident occurred around 4 PM, resulting in injuries to several prison guards. Upon receiving the report, the army and police promptly arrived at the scene, dispersed the attackers, and restored order.

This attack follows a day marked by multiple violent incidents across Gopalganj district. Early in the morning, Awami League and Chhatra League activists blocked the Ghonapara-Tekerhat regional road in Gandhiashur by felling trees, during which the UNO’s vehicle convoy was also attacked.

Shortly after, police vehicles were attacked, vandalized, and set on fire in Ulpur, leaving several officers injured.

In the afternoon, a group of Chhatra League activists unexpectedly attacked a pre-planned NCP rally in the city center, causing destruction before fleeing. Later, armed assailants attempted to ambush returning NCP activists, blocking their vehicles and police escorts. Security forces used sound grenades and blank fire to regain control, allowing the NCP group to escape safely.

The ongoing violence, road blockades, and arson have escalated tensions in the district. Law enforcement agencies remain on high alert to maintain peace and order.
