Lawyers in Gopalganj staged a protest demanding the removal and exemplary punishment of a judicial magistrate after a trainee female lawyer was allegedly injured by a paperweight thrown by the judge during court proceedings.

The demonstration began around 10:30am with a procession from the Gopalganj court premises on Thursday (July 23).

The march paraded through key roads in the town before returning to the courthouse, where lawyers held a protest rally.

Speaking at the rally, advocates Habibur Rahman, Milon Sharif, Rokaiya Akter Rupa and others strongly condemned the judge's conduct, describing it as incompatible with judicial ethics.

They also called for an impartial investigation and immediate administrative action against the accused judge.

According to the protesting lawyers, the incident took place on Wednesday at Judicial Magistrate Court-2. They alleged that Judge Md Sujon Mia, angered by conversations among several lawyers and litigants seated at the back of the courtroom, threw a glass paperweight, which struck trainee lawyer Sabiha Sultana on the head.

She was later admitted to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital for treatment.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage within the legal community, with lawyers insisting that such conduct undermines the dignity of the judiciary and warrants swift disciplinary measures.
