Government alert to prevent mob culture: Home minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the current government has brought mob violence largely under control and remains vigilant against the spread of a “mob culture”.

He made the remarks on Tuesday (1 September) while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the Border School of Warfare and Drone Warfare and a still-photography exhibition at the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Sylhet Sector in Akhalia, Sylhet city.

Salahuddin Ahmed said the BGB is being modernised to control criminal activities in border areas. This would help reduce smuggling and other forms of crime along the border, he said.

He also said the Narcotics Control Act was being strengthened to curb the spread of drugs.

This was Salahuddin Ahmed’s first visit to Sylhet since taking charge as home minister. After arriving at Sylhet Osmani International Airport from Dhaka by air, he was welcomed by senior local BNP leaders and senior officials of the administration.

According to his itinerary, the minister was scheduled to attend a special review meeting at the Sylhet Circuit House at 3:30pm with senior district administration and law enforcement officials to assess the overall law-and-order situation and development activities in the district.

Later in the afternoon, Salahuddin Ahmed, a BNP Standing Committee member and home minister, was scheduled to attend a discussion meeting organised by the Sylhet District BNP at the Sylhet District Shilpakala Academy in the Shahi Eidgah area to mark the BNP’s 48th founding anniversary.

He was scheduled to return to Dhaka by air afterwards.
