Government plans to drill 150 gas wells by 2030: State Minister

The government is working to eliminate the gap between gas demand and supply in Bangladesh by 2030, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit has said.

As part of the effort to increase gas production, the government has planned to drill 150 gas wells by 2030, he said.

The state minister made the remarks on Saturday (September 19) while inaugurating the supply of gas from Well No. 28 of the Titas Gas Field in Brahmanbaria to the national grid. The new well will add 12.5 million cubic feet of gas per day to the national grid.

Anindya Islam Amit said 29 wells have already been drilled as part of the plan to drill 150 wells. As part of the ongoing initiative, gas supply from Titas Well No. 28 has now begun at a rate of 12.5 million cubic feet per day.

He said these small-scale initiatives would help bridge the gap between gas demand and supply by 2030. The gas from the new well would also play an important role in providing relief to consumers, he added.

The drilling of Titas Well No. 28 began on December 15 last year in the Suhilpur area of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila. Drilling was completed on May 27, and experimental gas supply from the well to the national grid began on June 19. Gas worth around Tk 200 crore has already been supplied from the well.

Project Director Jasim Uddin Munna said the well has a wellhead shut-in pressure of 3,600 psi and a flowing pressure of 2,100 psi. He expressed hope that gas could be extracted from the well for a long period.

The well is currently producing 12.5 million cubic feet of gas per day, which is being supplied to the national grid.
