Government to buy 220,000 tonnes of fertiliser

The government has approved the purchase of 220,000 metric tonnes of urea, DAP and TSP fertiliser from domestic and foreign sources in the current 2026-27 fiscal year. The total cost of buying this fertiliser will be about Tk 1,675 crore.

Six proposals for fertiliser purchase were approved at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase held at the Secretariat on Thursday, October 1, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

According to the approved proposals, 30,000 metric tonnes of bagged granular urea fertiliser will be bought from Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (Kafco) in the third lot. This will cost Tk 162,39,10,312. The price of urea fertiliser per metric tonne has been set at $438.125.

Additionally, the import of 40,000 metric tonnes of bulk granular urea fertiliser from Saudi Arabia's Sabic Agri-Nutrients Company in the sixth lot has been approved. This will cost Tk 228,89,86,140. The price per tonne will be $463.17.

Another 40,000 metric tonnes of bulk granular urea fertiliser will be imported from the United Arab Emirates' Fertiglobe-UAE on a CFR basis in the first lot. This will cost Tk 269,55,70,000. The price per metric tonne has been set at $545.

On the other hand, under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement with Morocco's OCP Nutricrops, a total of 110,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser in three lots has been approved for import by the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC).

Among these, the import of 40,000 metric tonnes of DAP fertiliser in the seventh lot will cost Tk 433,76,42,000. The price per metric tonne will be $877.

The import of 30,000 metric tonnes of TSP fertiliser in the eighth lot will cost Tk 247,67,21,865. The price per tonne has been set at $667.67. Another 40,000 metric tonnes of TSP fertiliser will be imported in the ninth lot. This will cost Tk 330,22,95,820. In this lot too, the price of TSP fertiliser per metric tonne is $667.67.

A total of 220,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser is being bought in the six purchase proposals approved by the government. Among them are 110,000 tonnes of urea, 40,000 tonnes of DAP and 70,000 tonnes of TSP fertiliser.
