Government to import 5 cargoes of LNG in August

The government will import five more cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in August, totalling approximately 16 million British thermal units (MMBtu).

Petrobangla Director (Finance) A K M Mizanur Rahman told BSS on Thursday that the additional cargoes have been secured to maintain stability in the gas supply system. He said these were purchased under spot market, long-term and short-term contracts to meet the country's growing energy demand . Each cargo contains around 3.2 million MMBtu of LNG.

Mizanur Rahman said a total of nine LNG cargoes will be imported in August. Four have already arrived, with the remaining five scheduled to reach the country by August 30.

For August, one cargo was purchased under a long-term contract, five under short-term contracts and three from the spot market, according to Petrobangla sources.

In July, the government imported 11 LNG cargoes totalling approximately 35.2 million MMBtu under long-term, short-term and spot market arrangements.

According to Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL), QatarEnergy and OQ Trading, the Sultanate of Oman's energy and commodities trading arm, supply LNG to Bangladesh under long-term agreements. OQ Trading also supplies LNG under short-term contracts. The government also procures spot cargoes subject to approval from the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase each month.
