Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum announced that the government will appoint around 3,500 doctors during the tenure of the interim government. She made the statement on Friday while visiting the Chattogram Mother and Child General Hospital.

The adviser also warned that student admissions would be halted in medical colleges that fail to meet the government’s prescribed standards.

Highlighting the acute shortage of medical staff, Nurjahan Begum said, “Government hospitals currently face a deficit of 10,000 doctors and 12,000 nurses. To address this, 3,500 doctors will be recruited during the interim government’s tenure.”

She emphasized that doctors should remain free from political affiliations. In addition, the government plans to regulate the prices of 300 essential medicines in the near future.

On nursing development, the advisor revealed that the government is taking steps to enhance the skills of diploma nurses. “There will be arrangements to send diploma nurses to Japan for advanced training, starting from Chattogram,” she said.
