The government will work jointly with Bishwo Shahitto Kendro to foster a reading habit among students nationwide.

The decision came during talks between Primie Minister (PM) Tarique Rahman and the organisation’s founder Abdullah Abu Sayeed at the Secretariat on Thursday (April 23).

Strategies to expand book-reading programmes across primary, secondary and higher secondary levels were discussed in the meeting.

According to the PM’s press wing, relevant ministries—including education, primary education and culture—have been instructed to coordinate efforts to scale up reading initiatives among students across the country.

Officials said the meeting also focused on practical steps to widen access to books and embed reading programmes more effectively within the education system.

Education Adviser A N M Ehsanul Haque Milan, Cultural Affairs Adviser Nitai Roy Chowdhury and other senior officials were present at the meeting.

The latest move follows an earlier discussion between the PM and Abdullah Abu Sayeed on April 7, where the groundwork for a joint initiative was first outlined.
