Govt discouraging raw jute exports to ensure local supply: State Minister

The government is discouraging raw jute exports to ensure adequate supply of raw materials for the domestic jute-based industry, Textiles and Jute State Minister Md Shariful Alam has said.

He was speaking to journalists on Sunday, July 12, after a cheque and sewing machine distribution programme for destitute women at the Kishoreganj District Administration conference hall.

The state minister said research is underway to develop new varieties of jute seeds locally to reduce dependence on foreign seeds and revive the golden past of jute. This will help achieve self-reliance in the sector and boost production.

He also said farmers will receive fair prices for their jute this year, similar to last year.

At the event, financial assistance totalling Tk 10,15,000 was distributed among 18 disadvantaged women, and sewing machines were distributed to five others for self-employment.

District administration officials and local MPs were present at the programme.
