Govt food grain stock exceeds 16.90 lakh metric tonnes

Total food grain stock, including rice and wheat, in government storage has reached 16,90,146 metric tonnes, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Food until May 5, 2026 .

Government godowns currently hold 12,25,087 metric tonnes of rice, 3,45,184 metric tonnes of wheat, and 265 metric tonnes of paddy. The total stock in storage stands at 15,70,443 metric tonnes. Including floating stock in transit, the total food grain reserve rises to 16,90,946 metric tonnes .

Officials of the food ministry have described the current stock as satisfactory for ensuring national food security. A stock of 13,50,000 metric tonnes is considered a safe reserve .

Food Secretary Abu Taher Md Masud Rana said the stock is expected to increase further in the coming days as the procurement drive for the ongoing Boro season is underway. He said the government has set a target to procure a total of 18 lakh metric tonnes of food grains this season .

The procurement drive began on May 3 and will continue until August 31. The collection targets include 5 lakh metric tonnes of paddy, 12 lakh metric tonnes of rice (including 1 lakh metric tonnes of Atap rice), and 50,000 metric tonnes of wheat . With additional imports and other measures, the food stock is expected to rise further, the secretary added .

The food ministry issues a daily food grain report and has been actively working to ensure food security across the country . Bangladesh produced an estimated 3.96 crore tonnes of rice and 1.18 crore tonnes of wheat in the 2025-26 fiscal year .
