The government has already undertaken several effective measures aimed at reforming the media sector, said Md. Mahfuz Alam, Adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

He made the remarks on Wednesday (July 9) during a courtesy meeting with Susan Vize, UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh, held at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The adviser stated that a task force has been formed to reform the newspaper circulation audit system. Additionally, work is underway to draft an ordinance to ensure the protection of journalists’ rights, which is expected to come into effect soon.

He further noted that several more reform initiatives related to the media sector will likely be implemented in the coming months.

Regarding press freedom in Bangladesh, Mahfuz Alam asserted, “Currently, there is no government pressure on the media. Media outlets enjoy full freedom in news reporting.”

He also mentioned that a policy-based code of conduct for journalists is being developed and will be finalized through consultations with media organizations and other stakeholders.

Lena Fox, international consultant from UNESCO’s Division of Freedom of Expression and Media Development, was also present at the meeting.
