The government has issued the gazette for the 'Organ Transplantation Ordinance, 2025', aimed at regulating the collection, preservation and lawful use of organs for transplantation.

The ordinance, published on Wednesday (November 19), repeals the Organ Transplantation Act, 1999, citing inadequacies in the previous law.

According to the ordinance, a new, updated framework was necessary to simplify organ transplantation, prevent commercial misuse and curb illegal trafficking. The President issued the ordinance under Article 93(1) of the Constitution.

Earlier, on 17 July, the draft received final approval at the 34th meeting of the Advisory Council, chaired by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

At a briefing that day, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said the old law had long been outdated and the new ordinance would make organ transplantation “much easier.” The scope of eligible donors has been expanded—allowing relatives such as nephews and nieces to donate, which was not permitted earlier.

He added that with the new ordinance, Bangladeshis will no longer need to travel abroad for kidney transplants, as local hospitals will now be able to provide the service, calling it a “landmark law” for the country.
