Govt may allow onion imports if prices do not drop within this week: Commerce Adviser

Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin has said that the government will approve onion imports if prices do not fall within the next four to five days.

He said this on Sunday afternoon while speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Commerce conference room in the Secretariat.

He stated that the government is closely monitoring the market situation. There is currently sufficient stock of onions in the country, and new seasonal onions will arrive on the market within two weeks. However, if prices do not decline in the coming days, the government will decide to allow imports.

The commerce adviser also mentioned that the government has received around 2,800 applications for onion imports. Approving even 10 percent of them would flood the market with onions. However, the government is monitoring carefully to ensure that prices do not drop excessively, causing losses to farmers.
