The government is planning to develop an international-standard airport in Bogura with a 10,500-foot runway capable of accommodating both domestic and international aircraft, Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Afroza Khanam Rita said on Thursday (May 7).

The announcement came during an on-site inspection of Bogura Airport, where senior government officials reviewed proposed expansion plans.

Speaking to reporters, the minister said the visit was conducted under the directive of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, adding that the government aims to turn Bogura into one of the country’s key aviation hubs.

“The journey of this major aviation initiative begins from Bogura. The region holds immense potential, and we want to unlock it through improved connectivity and aviation infrastructure,” she said.

Civil Aviation and Tourism State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat said the project would also include the establishment of a modern cargo facility to support the transportation and export of agricultural and industrial products from the region.

“We are planning a 10,500-foot runway so that both local and international aircraft can operate from Bogura. The cargo facility will play a vital role in boosting trade and exports in the northern region,” he said.

Officials said the expansion plan also includes establishing a pilot training academy as part of broader efforts to strengthen the aviation, trade and transport sectors in northern Bangladesh.

Among others present during the visit were Hasan Mahmood Khan, Secretary of the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry Fahmida Akhtar, and senior officials from the ministry and airport authorities.
