Govt to halt sale of vegetables and agricultural products in open market: Finance adviser
The government has decided to stop the sale of vegetables and agricultural products in the open market, according to Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed. He informed the media of this decision after a meeting of the Government Procurement Advisory Council at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
When asked about the context behind this decision, the Finance Adviser explained that such activities have not had a significant impact on controlling the prices of commodities. Therefore, it will no longer continue.
In October, a pilot project began in the capital to sell vegetables and agricultural products at subsidized prices for low-income people. These products were sold in 20 areas of Dhaka every day. The government's Department of Agricultural Marketing implemented this initiative. Under the scheme, a package worth 650 Taka was offered, containing 10 items, including one dozen eggs, one kilogram of potatoes, one kilogram of onions, one kilogram of papaya, one piece of pumpkin, one kilogram of bitter melon, one kilogram of pointed gourd, one bottle gourd, one kilogram of edible aroid, and one kilogram of green chili.
