Govt to import 50,000 tonnes of rice from India

The government has approved the import of 50,000 tonnes of parboiled rice through an international open tender. The cost for bringing the rice from India will be BDT 21,768,931,70.

On Sunday, November 9, the proposal of the Ministry of Food was approved at a meeting of the Public Procurement Advisory Council Committee and the Economic Advisory Council Committee held in the conference room of the Cabinet Division Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Economic Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.

In the 2025-26 fiscal year, under International Open Tender Package-03, 50,000 tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice will be imported from India’s M/s Gurudev Exports Corporation Private Limited. The price per tonne has been set at $356.78.

Previously, on October 7, a proposal under Package-01 to import 50,000 tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice had also been approved. That rice will be imported from India’s M/s Bagadia Brothers Private Limited at a cost of BDT 21,909,930,0.

Based on another proposal from the Ministry of Food, the government has also approved the import of 220,000 tonnes of wheat from the United States under a government-to-government arrangement. The approved agency is AgroCrop International Private Limited through US Wheat Associates. The cost will be BDT 82,531,680,000, with a price of $308 per tonne.
