Govt to introduce national award honoring teacher Mehreen Chowdhury

The government is preparing to introduce a national award in the name of brave teacher Mehreen Chowdhury, who sacrificed her life to save a student during a tragic plane crash at Milestone School and College in Uttara.

The decision was taken on Thursday (August 7) during a meeting of the Advisory Council at the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat, chaired by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

Following the meeting, the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, Mohammad Shafiqul Alam, shared the details at a press briefing.

He said, “The Milestone tragedy was discussed once again, with a focus on how to honor those who lost their lives — particularly two teachers and a school staff member. A final decision will be announced soon.”

“Mehreen Chowdhury displayed remarkable bravery and courage while rescuing students at her school, ultimately sacrificing her life. To honor her, the Ministry of Education will soon introduce a national award named the 'Mehreen Chowdhury Award for Outstanding Services.' This award will be exclusively for teachers,” the press secretary added.
