Govt to release 37 long-term convicts
The government has decided to release 37 prisoners who have served 20 years or more of life or over-30-year sentences, including remission benefits.
An order was issued regarding this on Tuesday (November 4) and is expected to take effect within two days.
The list was finalised by a high-level committee of the Home Ministry based on recommendations from district prisons under Section 569 of the Jail Code.
Assistant Inspector General (Development) Md Jannat-ul Farhad said the inmates’ behaviour, age, and legal status were reviewed before approving sentence remission.
None of the released prisoners are female, though both genders were initially considered.
