Global fuel crisis
Govt urges public to avoid private vehicles, use public transport
Due to ongoing instability in the Middle East, global fuel supply has been disrupted, which may also impact Bangladesh. In anticipation of this, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has urged the public to reduce private vehicle use and increase reliance on public transport to tackle the potential fuel crisis. The ministry has also called for avoiding unnecessary lighting displays.
In a statement, the ministry said that assured fuel supply from various potential sources in terms of time and quantity has become uncertain. As a result, there may be temporary disruptions in meeting the country's current fuel demand, or supply adjustments may be necessary. This could lead to a slight decrease in electricity and fertiliser production. However, it has been stated that utmost caution will be exercised to minimise public hardship during the holy month of Ramadan.
To address the situation, the ministry has sought cooperation from the general public. A specific request has been made to reduce the use of private vehicles and opt for public transport instead. Emphasis has been placed on responsible citizen behaviour to conserve fuel. Additionally, to economise electricity and fuel usage, instructions have been given to avoid all kinds of unnecessary lighting displays.
The statement further said that businessmen and law enforcement agencies have been instructed to remain vigilant to halt the sale of diesel and petrol in the open market. District administrations, police administrations, and Border Guard Bangladesh have been requested to take necessary steps to prevent fuel smuggling.
The statement also mentioned that all possible measures have been taken to minimise the negative impact of the global situation. Efforts to ensure supply from various sources to maintain normal fuel procurement are ongoing. The public has been urged to exercise patience and extend full cooperation to ensure the success of the government's initiatives.
