Govt warns media over broadcasting Sheikh Hasina’s speeches
The interim government has issued a strict warning to media organizations that any broadcasting or republication of speeches by Sheikh Hasina will result in immediate legal action. The announcement came on Friday in a statement from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
The statement warned that airing the words of Sheikh Hasina, who has been convicted of criminal offenses and is accused of crimes against humanity, amounts to a serious violation of the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009. It also noted that the International Crimes Tribunal has already banned the spread of hate speech.
The interim government stated that some media outlets recently aired a speech by Sheikh Hasina, in violation of the law and court orders, in which she allegedly made false and provocative statements. Media were warned that any future broadcasts of this kind would face immediate legal action.
The statement also confirmed that the Awami League-led government has been dissolved and the party’s political activities are currently suspended. Under the Anti-Terrorism Act, it is illegal to support, promote, or broadcast messages from leaders of banned or proscribed organizations.
The interim government, led by Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, reaffirmed its commitment to restoring democratic institutions, ensuring accountability, and creating conditions for free, fair, and inclusive elections. It urged the media to act responsibly and maintain ethical standards during this critical period.
