Govt working to prevent another 16-year wait for fall of dictatorship: Yunus
The interim government is taking active steps to ensure that the fall of dictatorship does not require another prolonged wait of 16 years, said Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the month-long July Uprising commemoration program, Dr. Yunus emphasized the power of the people to swiftly end authoritarian rule. “We are working so that people do not have to wait 16 years for the fall of dictatorship,” he said. “If anyone tries to impose dictatorship in the future, the people will immediately bring about their downfall. No force can stop the public once they take to the streets.”
The government announced the ‘July Memory Celebration’ program through the Chief Advisor’s Press Wing, set to run from July 1 to August 5.
As part of the observance, prayers and supplications are being held today at mosques, temples, pagodas, churches, and other places of worship in memory of the martyrs. The July calendar is also being distributed, and a mass signature campaign demanding trial of those responsible for the July killings has begun, continuing until August 1. Additionally, a scholarship program for July martyrs will be inaugurated at the National University.
The program will conclude on August 5 with several events, including video sharing on the July 36 incident, wreath-laying at July martyr monuments across the 36 districts, meetings between the Chief Advisor and families of martyrs, a victory rally toward Manik Mia Avenue, an air show, musical performances, documentary screenings such as ‘36 Days of July,’ and a drone show.
